You may not know Meredith Koop by name, but you’re certainly familiar with her work. As Michelle Obama’s stylist, Koop is the sartorial genius behind some of the former first lady’s most iconic fashion moments in recent memory. (Yes, including the internet-breaking burgundy ensemble Obama wore to President Joe Biden’s inauguration.)

Who could forget the thigh-high gold metallic Balenciaga boots the former first lady donned during her “Becoming” book tour? Or how about the geometric printed Milly dress Obama wore for her official portrait? The red velvet Jason Wu gown she wore to the inaugural ball? We have Koop to thank for them all—and we’re on the edge of our seats waiting to see what she does next.

Here, the fashion stylist shares her best advice for cultivating confidence, her #1 financial tip for any new entrepreneur, and why her definition of success doesn’t just include money and accolades.

Going after what you deserve in life takes confidence and guts. Does confidence come naturally to you or did you have to learn it? What advice can you share for women on cultivating confidence and going after their dreams?

Confidence has not come naturally to me. I've had to learn techniques along the way and am still working on building from where I'm at today. I've definitely relied on the advice of others. I was told years ago, "Esteemable acts build self-esteem." Doing things that make you feel good in your soul and also being of service to others even in small ways throughout your day will allow you to go to sleep at night more peacefully and feel better about yourself. Another one is "fake it till you make it."

For those who haven’t started a business (or are about to) what advice do you have?

Consider your intention. Why are you doing what you're doing? What is your true motivation? If your definition of success only includes money and accolades, you may end up getting everything you want, but not what you actually need.

What is your number one piece of financial advice for any new entrepreneur and why?

Save your money. Ask for help. Invest in getting the help you need.

If you could go back to the beginning of your career journey—with the knowledge you have now— what advice would you give yourself?

I would offer this advice; advocate for yourself without fear. Create boundaries where you need them before you burn out. Work smarter, not harder. Do not compete with others in the game of who is suffering the most, who is working the hardest. It's not a game you want to win.

Fill in the blanks:

When I feel fear, I…

Acknowledge it and do it anyway.

I turn bad days around by…

Starting over, breathing, and moving. Move a muscle, change a thought.

If there were more hours in the day, I would…

Sleep more, exercise more, and read more.
